aBi participated in the 25th Source of the Nile National Agricultural Show from 17th – 23rd July 2017 in Jinja.
The main objective of aBi’s participation in the show was to create national awareness on aBi’s products and services, and also showcase the impact aBi is making in the agricultural business sector. This was in line with aBi’s mission of promoting private sector agribusiness development for wealth creation in Uganda. In addition, the theme for the 2017 show, “managing the challenges of climate change for sustainable agriculture”, was also in line with aBi’s Green Growth Strategy.
During the opening ceremony, H.E. the President said, “Climate change has become a critical issue in the world and it has affected productivity of farmers around the world. Weather patterns and seasons have changed all over the world and the unpredictability brought about a decrease in agricultural production. 69% of people are subsistence farmers but most are lazy to know and understand that the effects of climate change are taking a toll”. However, Mr. Charles Ogang, UNFFE President, asked that government to help farmers with the problems of climate change citing the high costs of irrigation equipment that has put off farmers from buying and using the equipment. “Government should subsidise agricultural irrigation equipment so that farmers can afford and be able to combat climate change effects” said the Mr. Ogang.
Hon. Gerald Ssendawula, who represented the aBi Board of Trustees, Chairperson, said, “irrigation can help small scale growers become commercial farmers as it enables them to grow crops throughout the year, even in the dry-seasons”. As part of the show program, aBi facilitated the Agricultural Financing Day discussion on 20thJuly 2017.
aBi was awarded the Best Exhibitor accolade during closing ceremony by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament of Republic of Uganda, who commended aBi Trust for supporting, the 2017 show and most importantly, the agricultural sector in Uganda.
aBi selected five Implementing Partners who participated and exhibited in the aBi stall at the show namely; NUMA Feeds Uganda Ltd, Ankole Coffee Producers Cooperative Union Ltd, Delight (U) Ltd, Bugadde SACCO and Letshego Uganda Ltd.
